Welcome to the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment for Union-WUC Water System Interconnection Project Portal

Background

The Union Water Supply System (UWSS) owns and operates the water system servicing the Town of Kingsville, Town of Essex, Municipality of Leamington, and Municipality of Lakeshore. The Windsor Utilities Commission (WUC) operates the water system servicing the City of Windsor, the Town of La Salle, and the Town of Tecumseh. Currently, these two independent water systems each have one supply source.

The UWSS and WUC have identified an opportunity to improve supply resilience by connecting the two systems. Water supply resiliency is increasingly important for water utility emergency preparedness as climate change introduces more uncertainty in supply quality and quantity.

The Study

An environmental assessment study is being undertaken to identify alternatives, evaluate the potential environmental impacts, and seek input from the public and other interested parties.

Public Consultation Opportunities

Members of the public, agencies, Indigenous communities and other interested persons are encouraged to actively participate in the planning process by attending consultation opportunities, in-person or online, or contacting staff directly with comments or questions.

Two Public Information Centres (PICs) are planned to be held locally within both water system areas:

• PIC#1 will provide additional details about the project and its opportunities, constraints and anticipated challenges.

• PIC#2 will outline alternative design concepts, evaluation methodology, and recommended alternative for public consideration and feedback.

More details for the PICs will be announced to the public once available.

In addition, two virtual PICs (vPICs) will be launched to provide an online method of public engagement. The vPICs will be hosted online on this website for a period of time after each PIC to extend the opportunity for public feedback and questions.
